Tablet weaving technique is one of the oldest weaving techniques and has been known in the territory of Latvia at least from the beginning of the 6th century, although the patterned tablet-woven band celaines have been made only starting from the 11th century.

The pattern motif in Lielvārdes type sashes changes 10-20 times, and each motif repeating itself may possibly appear in a new version. Nowadays the Lielvārde sash in included in the Latvian Cultural canon as a traditional cultural value.
