Patterned tablet-woven band celaine. Wool, linen. Līvāni, Latgale
Tablet weaving technique is one of the oldest weaving techniques and has been known in the territory of Latvia at least from the beginning of the 6th century, although the patterned tablet-woven band celaines have been made only starting from the 11th century. Tablet-woven sashes – celaines – have got their name from the tools used for their weaving. In the ethnographic material of Latvia, tablet-weaving technique is the most widespread and has reached the highest degree of development in Latgale, but it is also familiar in the trims of the woolen shawls of folk costumes in Zemgale, , Kurzeme and Vidzeme.
